That depends entirely on the version. TYPO3 14.3 LTS receives free security updates until 30 June 2029 and TYPO3 13.4 LTS until 31 December 2027. Free support for TYPO3 12.4 ended on 30 April 2026 and for TYPO3 11.5 back on 31 October 2024 – both can only be covered by the TYPO3 GmbH paid ELTS programme now.
TYPO3 10.4, 9.5 and anything older receive no updates at all; for 9.5 even ELTS ended on 30 September 2025. If you are unsure which version you are running, it is shown at the bottom left of the backend – and I will look at it during the free first conversation.
The website keeps running, which is exactly what makes it tricky. Every vulnerability published after the support date stays open, and TYPO3 security advisories are published openly – readable by attackers as well.
There is a second effect: the more version jumps accumulate, the more extensions are affected at once and the harder the effort is to estimate. An upgrade from TYPO3 12.4 to 14.3 is routine; one from 9.5 is a project involving Rector runs, TCA changes and replacements for removed core APIs.
TYPO3 13.4 and 14.3 both require PHP 8.2 as a minimum and are tested up to PHP 8.5. TYPO3 12.4 runs from PHP 8.1, and TYPO3 11.5 still dates from the PHP 7.4 era.
If your server runs a PHP version that no longer receives security updates itself, an up-to-date TYPO3 core helps little – the two axes belong in one plan. During an upgrade I therefore check both, and in practice the hosting provider's date for switching off the old PHP version triggers more upgrades than the TYPO3 support date does.
The core costs almost nothing; the extensions decide the price. So an audit comes first: every installed extension is checked and sorted into one of four categories – maintained and compatible, replaceable by an alternative, superseded by core functionality, or in need of a rewrite.
You receive a list with the effort per item and a recommendation, and the quote follows from it. Smaller, clearly bounded upgrades are offered at a fixed price; for larger ones I work by effort with a binding upper limit per stage. A flat price without that analysis would be a guess – with TYPO3 it is the existing installation that decides the effort.
Your own extensions decide that, not the number of pages. A jump across one LTS version with maintained extensions is done in a few days; add custom extensions that have not seen a release in years and it becomes a project spanning several weeks.
The sequence is always the same four stages: audit, test instance, code, content. The upgrade runs on a copy of the database and files first – you see and operate the result before anything goes into production. The go-live date is fixed only once the test instance stands.

A sitepackage is the single extension bundling the templates, TypoScript, configuration and assets of your website. It is the difference between an installation that can be versioned and moved to another server, and one whose state exists only inside the backend.
For any project meant to outlive a campaign: yes. It pays off for the first time at the next LTS upgrade, because by then it is clear what belongs to the theme and what does not. Content Blocks now cover what used to require custom extensions or Mask elements.
Measured against the Core Web Vitals: Largest Contentful Paint below 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint below 200 milliseconds, Cumulative Layout Shift below 0.1. Those are the thresholds at which Google counts a value as “good”.
What matters is that this is measured in the field rather than in the lab – a Lighthouse score of 100 on a development machine says little about a mobile connection. The usual levers in TYPO3 are image formats and sizes, the caching configuration, the number of third-party scripts embedded, and the question of how much is needed in the first viewport at all.
Yes, and it is one of TYPO3's strengths over most alternatives. Several domains share a core, a sitepackage and one editorial interface while keeping their own content, languages, permissions and designs.
The effort for updates is spent once instead of per website – across five sites that is the difference between one maintenance contract and five. A multisite setup makes sense when the sites belong together organisationally; for separate clients with separate budgets, keeping them apart is often the better answer.
The content gets migrated, not retyped. Before the migration comes an inventory: what content exists, which of it should actually come along, and what structure it gets in TYPO3.
Every previously reachable address then receives a redirect with status code 301 – only the permanent variant passes the standing of the old address on to the new one, and I resolve redirect chains because beyond about 5 hops most crawlers give up. A before-and-after comparison of loading time, Core Web Vitals and indexing status is part of it.
Yes. Maintenance and support are explicitly provided for, but not a condition: if your own team takes over, it gets handed over properly – with repository, documentation and an introduction.
